Brookhaven's Seminar Snapshots "Biological Psychiatry vs. Psychotherapy: Which One Works?” Presenter: Dennis Cavenah, LPC, LMFT Date: January 7th 2009 Synopsis: There are disadvantages and benefits to both biological psychiatry and psychotherapy in the treatment of depression. Psychotherapeutic techniques in particular possess a great many advantages such as non-medical treatment, no side effects of medication, shorter length of treatment, and the opportunity to explore cause and effect of stressors causing depression. During his presentation, Dennis Cavenah, LPC/LMFT led participants in an exploration of the etiology of depression, biological treatments, preferred counseling treatments, and the importance of the therapeutic relationship.
